The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation sought a design for a waterfront museum with a year-round focus on culture and entertainment to serve as a gathering place for residents and visitors. Pulling inspiration from the Finnish countryside, the landscape mimics a large tapestry of fabric, ebbing and flowing with the rolling plains and low hills. In an effort to bring that natural beauty to the downtown area, the design imagines taking the fertile countryside and lifting it on to the site. The 12.54 m2 space includes a museum gallery, public park, conference hall, and dining facilities.
Keeping the traditional Finnish philosophy of every man’s right to roam in mind, the foundation of the design begins by creating an integrated pedestrian connection between South Harbor and Tahtitornin Park. This landscaped surface extends the natural beauty of the park fabric across Etelaranta Street and down to the waterfront. The pathway design works as both a horizontal and vertical connection between the waterfront and the city grid, penetrating the structure and blurring the boundaries between public and private space.
The connection climaxes as the visitor reaches the main hall. Turning the traditional layout of a museum inside out, the design provides visitors with an experience that alternates between interior and exterior spaces. The interior of the main exhibition hall can be viewed from the pathway outside as one circulates around the large architectonic form. From there, the design comes alive and unfurls into several natural gathering spaces where museum visitors can enjoy where the city meets the water.

ETFE fabric allows natural light through, while louvered structures and advanced film-insulated glazing create illuminated spaces with reduced solar heat gain. By using geothermal systems, recycled water, a vegetated roof, and double-wall facades, an energy-saving building with longevity that will transcend environmental concerns is created.
