Qianhai is a new center in the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. Qianhai Bay, in the heart of the Pearl River Delta, is an important node along the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road—part of world’s economic and cultural network. Primarily a conference center, the Qianhai International Financial Exchange Center (IFEC), is a complex with a hotel and public spaces, designed as a connector between all parts of Qianhai and the waterfront.

Three distinctive volumes form a large outdoor space, or the urban atrium. This urban atrium—also a shared foyer of the conference center and the hotel—brings public activities into the heart of the complex. Opening up a public route connecting Qianhai’s future main transportation hub with the waterfront park, the urban atrium can also function as a place for cultural events and daily leisure activities. Such public and cultural programs, shared by everyone in Qianhai, connect different districts together, while reinforcing the relationship between professional events at the conference center and daily life in the city.

The three volumes that comprise IFEC include: a stepping-shaped conference center with terraces facing the bay and the park; a second volume, housing hotel amenities and public programs oriented towards the central axis of the business district; and a polyhedron-shaped 400-room hotel that sits on top, with views open to all directions. The building’s form is a response to the context. The façades facing Qianhai Bay relate to the scale of the waterfront, appearing light and porous, characterized by curved surfaces resembling sails. The urban façades echo the scale and intensity of the surrounding buildings in Qianhai’s CBD.

A second pedestrian bridge leading to the transportation hub is located underneath the sail-like facades at the tip of the Conference Center. This bridge is connected to a series of spaces for public activities, which allow visitors to reach all levels of the conference center—from the hotel roof garden to the pedestrian network in the basement—enabling public life in the conference center during days without major events. Activities at the urban atrium and inside the building animate the architecture at the waterfront—a beacon for ships sailing the new Maritime Silk Road, a link in the global exchange network.
